Calvary, a View of the CrossBy Edison Swartz
As Jesus stumbled along the dirt streets of Jerusalem He saw many angry faces glaring at Him. They spat at His face and blood-strewn body. Understanding that these people were the same that He was about to die for on this old wooden cross, He looked with deep sadness at their angry faces. Among those angry and yelling faces, a few of His faithful followers wept and offered Him cool water. The guards who continually pushed Him and forced His every move, pushed them into the yelling crowd. Seeing that Jesus, the Son of God, could bear His wooden cross no longer, one of the guards grabbed a man named Simon and threw him down and placed the cross on him instead of Jesus. Simon was visiting Jerusalem from the city of Cyrene and happened upon the mad bunch of people waiting for the crucifixion of Jesus. Stumbling, Simon carried the cross till Golgotha which was nicknamed the “Place of Skull”. Jesus stumbled along in front of Simon with the Guards being as harsh as ever. Shoving and whipping didn’t cease until they came to Golgotha where Jesus stood watching, blurry-eyed, as the Guards quickly attached the ropes to the cross that Simon had so willingly carried. Shoved from behind, He was put into place on the cross and His hands were pierced with agonizing blows with the crude metal hammer. Brutally, His feet were bound and pierced as well. His scars were agitated by the cross and He bled all over the cross and the ground below Him.
Jesus died that day, to cover the cost of your sin. He rose again two days later and went to Heaven to await the time when He again can come to take us home. Because of what happened on that day, you have the choice to have eternal life, if you choose Jesus. You can choose Him today, by just asking Him to lead your life, and help you through the trials of life. If you haven’t prayed before, you can say this prayer: “Dear Jesus, I trust you with my life. I want you to show me how to live, I believe You love me more than anything. Thank you for helping me through life, in Jesus’s name, Amen.” Copyright 2015, His Word Publications Inc.
